Emergency Fuel Surcharge Expansion

Fuel-related surcharges and embargoes continue to impact the global container shipping market, with the latest announcements now affecting a wider range of trade lanes as ship lines respond to service disruption and rising bunker fuel (ship fuel) costs linked to the ongoing situation in the Middle East.

Up until now, the Middle Eastern conflict’s impact has largely been centred around the immediate surrounding area or “war zone”.

Emergency Fuel Surcharges (EFS) are now being introduced on what once were considered non-related trade lanes – for example, and notably, Asia to New Zealand and Trans-Tasman markets are now impacted.

The following shipping lines have now declared the introduction of Emergency Fuel Surcharges (EFS) across multiple trade lanes:

  • Ocean Network Express (ONE) – introduction of an Emergency Fuel Surcharge (EFS) across multiple trade lanes. ONE Line has advised that a number of services have been disrupted and operations are currently subject to multiple constraints, contingency measures and rising costs, with the duration of these conditions remaining uncertain
  • Hapag Lloyd – introduction of an Emergency Fuel Surcharge (EFS) across ALL trades due to sharply rising global bunker costs. The surcharge applies to any sailings commencing on or after March 23, 2036.
  • Maersk – Following yesterday’s announcement of an Emergency Bunker Surcharge (EBS), Maersk have issued a revised trade key classification confirming New Zealand – Asia movements. Maersk have confirmed the EBS surcharge applies globally across all trades. Each trade has been independently weighted.
  • ANL – Announcement made yesterday of an Emergency Fuel Surcharge introduction.

Presently, we are seeing EFS surcharges being implemented at a low of USD 70.00 / TEU (20’) on the Trans-Tasman market to a high of USD 160.00 / TEU (20’) on long-haul markets (e.g. Asia to NZ).

We will continue to monitor the fast-changing situation and keep you updated. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to be in contact with your Stellar customer service operator or myself.
