Port of Auckland has clearance to bring in vital port workers

Immigration authorities have granted clearance to Ports of Auckland to bring in five critical workers who could help clear its massive backlog of cargo.

The currently offshore crane operators have leave to apply for special border exemptions. Their arrival could greatly assist in clearing the backlog of cargo and in doing so alleviate significant stress and cost to all affected importers and exporters.

To date the Port of Auckland has only been able to operate at best three of eight cranes during the day (two only at night) due to a lack of trained staff capable of operating the machinery involved.

It is hoped their arrival could be within weeks and it is possible congestion relief four to six weeks thereafter.
